A person with these traits is more intelligent than they look.

A young man with short hair, wearing a black long-sleeve shirt, gazes upward while standing on a sunlit forest path. Trees with bare branches line the trail, receding into the background. The setting appears serene and contemplative.

Can you tell whether or not someone is intelligent just by looking at them? You probably think you can, but you’d be wrong as much as you’d be right. A smart person might not look how you expect them to, but there are some signs you can try to observe that will reveal a person’s true knowledge and wisdom.

1. They have good observational skills.

An elderly man with grey hair sits thoughtfully in profile, wearing a blue shirt, holding glasses in his hand, with window blinds in the background. The lighting casts shadows, highlighting his contemplative expression.

Intelligent people pay attention to the details. They understand that details are important because they provide valuable context that may inform a decision. One minor detail can change the whole context of what they’re looking at or studying.

2. They are curious about things.

A person with short blonde hair is looking to the side, wearing a brown tweed hat with a decorative band and a light-colored sweater. They have a thoughtful expression, resting their chin on their hand, in a warmly lit indoor setting with a blurred background.

Curiosity provides infinite intellectual stimulation for an intelligent person. It is a constant state of learning and awe of the wider world. Intelligent people like to collect knowledge about different experiences, people, places, and things. So, they explore, they want to find new things to add to their knowledge and experience.

3. They value critical thinking.

A young woman with long brown hair is looking slightly upwards with a thoughtful expression. She is gently touching her lips with her finger. She is wearing a light blue, striped button-up shirt and is set against a soft blue background.

Critical thinking allows you to better evaluate a thing to find the truths buried therein. That may be analyzing a story you’re listening to, watching the news, or figuring out a complicated problem. Critical thinking is intellectually stimulating because it is essentially complicated problem -solving. How do all these pieces fit together to form the final picture?

4. They are adaptable.

A smiling man with a shaved head and well-groomed beard is wearing a light gray blazer. He is standing outdoors on a sidewalk, with out-of-focus buildings and trees in the background. The overall scene appears bright and lively.

An intelligent person knows that the plan isn’t always going to play out as they expect. So, they plan for the plan to go awry, because it undoubtedly will once it’s put into practice. Adaptability is incredibly important to not only accomplish your goals, but to stay happy with life. They know and understand that.

5. They have strong problem-solving skills.

A woman in a peach hoodie looks directly at the camera, framed between two tree trunks. She has short brown hair and a serene expression. Blurred greenery is visible in the background, suggesting a natural outdoor setting.

Problem-solving skills are rooted in intelligence. It may not be traditional book intelligence, though. There are many people who don’t pursue higher education who work with their hands and develop good problem-solving skills to get the job done when it’s time.

6. They are humble.

An older woman with short, gray hair smiles warmly while sitting at a table indoors. She wears a light-colored shirt and gestures with one hand. Another person, whose back is to the camera, sits across from her. The setting appears to be relaxed and friendly.

Humility is a trademark of intelligent, aware people. They may not be book smart, but they are ‘people smart’ enough to know that they don’t know everything and that everyone has something to contribute. They know that other people can bring a lot to the table with their own knowledge and experience. That’s also mentally stimulating because they are learning new things.

7. They are effective communicators.

A man and a woman are sitting at a desk in an office setting, engaged in a conversation. The woman is looking attentively at the man, who has his back to the camera. Shelves with binders and books are visible in the background.

Communication is an important skill to develop. The ability to express oneself well verbally and through the written word allows you to connect meaningfully with others. Furthermore, it allows one to really learn from others because you can have good, exploratory conversations. Good communication also prevents misunderstandings from happening, which is a valuable skill in itself.

8. They often have a good sense of humor.

Two women are sitting at a table, smiling and laughing. One woman has dark hair and wears a brown sweater with a pink and white argyle pattern. The other woman has long, blond hair and wears a striped shirt. Both are holding white coffee mugs. A green curtain is in the background.

A sense of humor may point to intelligence because that person understands many things. They understand that not everything goes right. They understand that they are flawed people. They understand that life is sometimes hard, but they can still find a reason to laugh, anyway.

9. They often have great empathy.

Two people are sitting close on the floor, with one person comforting the other. One has their head bowed and is being comforted by the other who has a hand on their back. The scene conveys empathy and support. Both individuals are casually dressed.

The curse of awareness is knowing the suffering that happens to so many people. An intelligent person is likely to be acutely aware of the greater picture of suffering and feel it themselves. They may keep up with the news, learn about it from people themselves, or may have chosen to help in those situations. As a result, they may demonstrate greater empathy for others for their suffering.

10. They have a passion for reading.

A man with short hair and a beard is intently reading a book. He is wearing round glasses and a plaid shirt. The background is plain and light-colored.

The amazing thing about reading is that you can learn so much from another person without needing to sit down and fully talk to them. You can read the thoughts and experiences of people all over the world, from different times and with different experiences. Furthermore, reading is good exercise for the brain, to keep it happy and healthy. Intelligence can only improve when reading a good book because it adds to the knowledge that an intelligent person already has.
