This is why unsuccessful people don’t get anywhere of significance in life.

A person with sunglasses and a dark jacket leans on a wooden railing along a boardwalk. They are surrounded by tall grasses, and the atmosphere is calm and overcast.

What makes an unsuccessful person that way? What is it that holds them back from achieving the things they would like to achieve if they could simply wave a wand and make it happen? Well, because magic isn’t real, success requires the right mixture of traits and attributes, many of which unsuccessful people lack. Here are the reasons they will become background noise in the big picture of success.

1. They lack the ambition to create success.

A man with brown hair and a beard sits on a gray couch, wearing a green button-up shirt over a white T-shirt. He appears thoughtful, looking slightly upwards. Pillows are visible on the couch. The room has soft natural lighting.

Unsuccessful people often lack clear goals. They don’t have a sense of purpose or drive that keeps them disciplined and motivated through the rough times. Instead, they settle for whatever comes their way because they are fine with mediocrity. Granted, there’s a lot to be said about being happy with what one has. However, the drive for success is necessary to be successful.

2. They fear failure, so they don’t even try.

A man with short brown hair wearing round glasses, a denim jacket, and a white T-shirt stands against a plain light gray background. He has one hand resting on his chin and looks to the side with a thoughtful expression.

Fear holds many people back from taking the kinds of risks that will improve their lives or chances for success. They don’t get to experience new things because they won’t step out of their comfort zones. Instead of embracing challenges and looking for new experiences that will help them grow, they actively avoid them. They steer away from the discomfort by embracing any excuse that they can come up with.

3. They procrastinate instead of taking action.

A young woman with long blonde hair and glasses sits at a desk, leaning her head on her hand. She is wearing a white checkered shirt over a gray top. In front of her is an open notebook with a pen. The background is blurred.

Constantly putting the brake on life is a common reason for mediocrity. You can’t move on to other things if you delay actions, decisions, or tasks that need to be done. Unsuccessful people wait for that “perfect moment” that never comes because they convince themselves that this moment isn’t perfect. What they don’t understand, or maybe they do but deny it, is that there is no “perfect moment.” It’s a lie people tell themselves to avoid doing something.

4. They blame others for their shortcomings.

A man with dark hair and beard, wearing a black coat, is standing in a dimly lit indoor area. He is pointing directly at the camera with a serious expression. The background features blurred colored lights and industrial elements.

Instead of taking responsibility for their own lives, unsuccessful people often blame external factors for their shortcomings. They blame other people, circumstances, or bad luck when things go wrong. They don’t examine themselves or look for ways to learn and improve. What separates the successful and unsuccessful is a willingness to self-examine and fix problems that they can fix, or pivot to a new solution.

5. They lack the discipline needed for success.

A man with short dark hair and a beard looks pensively out of a window. His hands are clasped together under his chin, and soft light illuminates his face. The window appears to have rain on it, adding to the contemplative mood.

Success requires consistency and self-discipline. Mediocre people don’t stick to routines—they give in to distraction and quit easily. They are never able to build the momentum they need to achieve their goals. As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” No success is built in a day either. It requires time, consistent effort, and personal growth to achieve the results that you’re looking for.

6. They avoid the hard work necessary for success.

A young woman with long brown hair and a green jacket leans on a wooden bench outdoors, looking directly at the camera. Trees and buildings are visible in the background, suggesting a park or urban setting. The expression on her face is pensive.

Nothing in life is free. Success requires hard work to climb to the peak of the mountain you want to get to. Unsuccessful people seek shortcuts or an easy way out so that they don’t need to sacrifice or struggle. Entitlement creates an expectation of success without any real commitment or hard work. The best way to progress is to not look for the shortcuts. Doing the work allows you to develop discipline and problem-solving skills.

7. They have a negative mindset.

A man in a red and black jacket stands on an empty, foggy road surrounded by tall trees. He looks pensively into the distance. The atmosphere is misty, and visibility is low.

A pessimistic mindset is self-sabotaging. You undermine your ability to succeed when you don’t look at the situation optimistically. Instead of focusing on opportunities and solutions, the pessimist focuses on obstacles and limitations, which keeps them stuck in mediocrity. Furthermore, it keeps them from progressing closer to any of their goals because they may come to believe that they are incompetent or unable.

8. They lack focus.

A young man sits on a yellow sofa in a living room, scratching his head and looking thoughtful. He holds an open notebook on his lap. The background includes shelves with books, a small plant, and a clock.

Jumping from one thing to another without dedicated focus prevents you from mastering any one skill or field. Instead of developing a deep understanding, the knowledge is superficial, and you have no real expertise. Many people think of the “jack-of-all-trades” as a good aspiration. The reality is that anyone can be a jack-of-all-trades because anyone can take in surface-level information. Mastery requires focus.

9. They have poor time management.

A person sits at a desk holding a smartphone in one hand and touching the top of a classic alarm clock with the other hand. The alarm clock is placed on the desk, showing the time as 7:00. The background includes blurred office supplies.

We all only have 24 hours in our day. People say life is short, but really, most people just waste a lot of time. Ineffective use of time leads to lost productivity. Unsuccessful, mediocre individuals often prioritize low-value tasks over important ones. They spend their valuable hours on activities that don’t contribute to their long-term success. Furthermore, they don’t schedule and plan their time. They just drift from thing to thing when they feel like it.

10. They settle for comfort.

A woman with red hair is lying on a gray sofa, holding a remote control. She is wearing a white t-shirt, black jeans, and white sneakers. Her legs are propped up on the armrest. The room is bright with large windows in the background.

Growth requires discomfort. If you’re comfortable, that means you’re not trying new things and pushing yourself forward. Life is an unending march against entropy if you want to get anywhere. Sure, you can try to maintain, but growing helps offset what we lose in life and pushes us toward more. A reluctance to leave one’s comfort zone means you aren’t challenging yourself to grow or improve. You just stay stuck in a rut that is boring and unfulfilling.

11. They surround themselves with mediocre people.

Three men are engaged in a conversation in a dimly lit setting with an exposed brick wall in the background. Two men in white and patterned button-down shirts are facing a man with dark hair, who is seen from behind. They appear animated and focused.

There is an old saying that you are “the sum of the five people closest to you.” That is, the company you keep influences your mindset. If you hang out with pessimists with no ambition or motivation, they are reinforcing their own mediocrity instead of a growth mindset. Negativity is contagious. Being around these people can and will influence your own perspective. Furthermore, they will often pull you into their time-wasting and negativity.

12. They lack persistence.

A man wearing glasses and a white shirt sits at a desk with a computer monitor and smartphone, resting his forehead in one hand as if stressed or tired. Several other people work at desks in the background.

Persistence is such an important part of success. Mediocre people give up when they are faced with obstacles or setbacks. Exceptional people view these obstacles as learning experiences. That didn’t work? That’s okay. Now, you know what doesn’t work and you can try something else. Or, maybe that obstacle points you to options that you didn’t realize were there. Quitting is easy. Perseverance helps you overcome the obstacles that separate you from greatness.
